Words Matter Week, which is in its 12th year, is a holiday that is celebrated annually the first full week in March by the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors.

Words are the basis for communication, no matter the language spoken. Babies make sounds, which eventually are formed into words. Here at NAIWE, we know the importance of words, and we want to celebrate it!

Writing Prompt: What word, said or unsaid, has or could change your life? How?

At NAIWE, the word that has had the most effect on us is “freelance.” We focus on benefitting our freelance members, offering them avenues to remain knowledgeable in the field and to increase their number of clients. The NAIWE goal is helping our members develop multiple streams of income, and we do this by promoting their products and services to people they might not have otherwise reached through our social media outlets and our newsletter, which reaches 6,000 publishing professionals every month.

Writing Prompt: Writers craft words into memorable phrases, stories, poems, and plays. What writers make your heart sing? Why?

We at NAIWE have an eclectic taste, with every member receiving at least one vote for their writing style making our hearts sing, and we enjoy reading the posts members put on their NAIWE blog. It helps us to get to know our members better and to look for more ways to help them develop their writing careers. Thus, the writers who stand out the most are the members who regularly post on their NAIWE blog and inspire us so much that we want to learn more from them.

Writing Prompt: What person in your life helped you understand the importance of choosing words carefully? What would you say to them if you met them today?

Our members make NAIWE choose its words carefully and responsibility and stand behind its words as the integrity and credibility of the association, as well as its integrity and credibility of its members. NAIWE would like to meet all its members face-to-face and presents this opportunity at the 2019 conference in St. Louis to that we can discuss the importance of choosing words. We also want o thank our members for their support and loyalty, and we would love to do this in person at the conference.

Writing Prompt: If you had to eliminate one word or phrase from the English language, what would it be? Why?

At NAIWE, we try to be positive and think about ways we can accomplish tasks. Therefore, the word we would like to eliminate from the English language is “can’t.” Instead of someone saying he can’t do something, we want him to be positive about the situation and say that he is working toward his goal but needs additional assistance or professional development. And that’s what we are here for! NAIWE is an association with a goal of helping you build multiple streams of income. We are here to help you develop your web presence and build your social media following. You can do it, and we are here to help!

National Grammar Day is an annual celebration to emphasize the importance of grammar. Some people suggest that grammar is a set of rules for language, but it is a system for understanding language. Understanding the system and the structure helps us to understand each other.

Established by Martha Brockenbrough, author of Things That Make Us [Sic] and founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar, National Grammar Day is celebrated on March 4.

As writers and editors, we know the importance of grammar. It is something many of us are paid to use correctly.

National Read Across America Day is an annual program to motivate people to read and celebrate their love of books. This event is held on March 2 of each year in honor of Theodor Seuss Geisel, a noted children’s book author known as Dr. Seuss.

Sponsored by the National Education Association, Read Across America was first celebrated in 1998 with a goal to celebrate reading to develop lifelong readers and affect student achievement.

As writers and editors, we know the importance of reading. It is something we do on a daily basis in the publishing profession.
